Pope Francis on Sunday publicly defended St. John Paul II, condemning as “offensive and baseless” insinuations that recently surfaced about the late pontiff.
After a two hour ceremony, Benedict was laid to rest in a crypt known as the Vatican Grottoes beneath the basilica, next to the tombs of nearly 90 other popes.
His encyclicals on faith, hope and love were an important part of legacy and he was known as the first green Pope who took environmental issues seriously.
