Muslims in Sweden carried car protest over Quran burning

RELIGIOUS NEWS AGENCY (REDNA) – A protest set up by the Muslim community in south Wales saw around 100 cars congregating in Cardiff city centre on Sunday before driving to Newport and back.

The protest was to show solidarity to the Muslim community in Sweden after a copy of the Quran was burned during a demonstration.

The incident took place outside Stockholm’s main mosque in June, an act described as Islamophobic and condemned by the Swedish government.

Calls have been made by the Saudi-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for desecration of the holy book to be outlawed.

Members of the Muslim community in south Wales met outside Cardiff City Hall to protest against the incident. It was set up by PTI, a Pakistani political party linked to former prime minister Imran Khan, but the organisers wished to stress the event was non-political and was welcome to all Muslims.

Organiser Ali Ajmal said: “There have been a couple of incidents recently and historically, with two in Sweden and Norway. The holy book of the Quran was burned. We are showing solidarity and condemnation about this shameful act.
